Coptic Binding with Wooden Board Covers

The Coptic binding is one of the oldest binding structures in the world, dating to as early as the 4th century. Traditionally, the pages of a Coptic book would have been papyrus with laminated papyrus covers. At Smokey Road Press, our bindings consist of beautifully finished wooden covers with paper pages.  We use a variety of hardwoods that have been planed and finished with care by an Athens-area woodworker. We use mahogany, oak, and cherry. Please call us for the selection of wood we are currently using before placing your order. The paper is Mohawk Superfine in soft white by the Mohawk Paper Company in Upstate New York. The paper is lovely to write and draw on- perfect for a journal or guest book.

We offer two sizes of this historic structure. Our journal size measures 4 ½” x 6” while our guest book measures 6” x 6”. If you wish to customize your book with a letterpressed title page, please contact us. Prices for custom title pages start at $75.
