Smokey Road Press provides time, space and a fully operational letterpress studio to artists and writers who are interested in printing a fine art letterpress edition. The Smokey Road Residency consists of the exclusive use of our drawing studio, shared space in our letterpress/bindery and a private residence for the duration of your stay. The drawing studio and accommodations are located in Winterville, Georgia, a fifteen minute drive to our letterpress shop. Residents are urged to bring a car, as they will be purchasing food and other provisions independently in addition to driving to and from the studio. Smokey Road Residents are selected by a small panel, which is comprised of a revolving group of distinguished Printmaking and Book Arts professionals.
Smokey Road Press is a working commercial shop and teaching space for most of the year. However, we set aside the first two weeks in August and the first three weeks of October for our residents. There may be one or two residents staying at a time. Couples are permitted to apply and residents may bring their families. We do not allow residents to bring their pets.
Smokey Road Press accepts applications from artists, designers and writers. The criteria for selection is based on the strength of the project proposal as well as on work samples. Please see the application guidelines for more details concerning the portfolio. Emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply. Applicants who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at the date of application are ineligible for a residency.
Residents may stay for one, two or three weeks. Artists with extensive letterpress experience may use the letterpress studio without professional assistance for a fee of $600 a week. Residents requiring the assistance of a Master Printer may do so for a fee of $1000 a week. We do not have a polymer platemaker on site. Paper and other materials are funded by the artist. We carry a small selection of paper, which may be purchased at the Smokey Road Press store. There is no fee to apply.
Applications are accepted all year round. The deadline for the August residency is March 1st. Those selected will be notified by March 15th. The deadline for the October residency is May 1st. Those selected will be notified by May 15th.
Work samples supporting the proposed project and completed within the last five years are requested from all applicants. Visual artists and designers should send an email with 5 images (pdfs or jpegs) or a link to their website to firstname.lastname@example.org. A visual image checklist specifiying the name of the artist, name of work, date and media must accompany all images. All collaborative efforts must be clearly labeled. Writers should send five poems or two selections of prose, not to exceed 4 pages.
